How customer service outsourcing cost is billed
Before you compare two quotes, check what each one actually bills for. Providers that publish prices use four units, and they behave very differently once your volume moves.
- Per dedicated agent, per month. You pay a fixed fee for one full-time person who works only on your brand. Influx, LTVplus and Bunch all price this way. Quiet hours cost the same as busy ones.
- Per hour worked. You pay for hours logged. HelpSquad bills "in arrears for hours actually worked", with a floor of 20 hours a week per assistant.
- Per resolved ticket. You pay for outcomes. Chatdesk's on-demand plan is $1,000 a month for 400 resolved tickets, about $2.50 each.
- Platform fee plus per conversation. This is the hybrid AI-plus-human model. Crescendo, which acquired PartnerHero in 2024, listed $2,900 a month plus $1.25 per solve in its last public price list.
Each unit hides a different risk. Per-agent pricing hides the idle hours you pay for overnight. Per-ticket pricing hides what happens to your bill in November. Noon Dalton, a UK outsourcer, makes a sharp point about incentives in its cost guide: billing on agent hours gives a provider no reason to reduce contacts, and per-transaction billing gives it a reason to drag issues into repeat contacts rather than fix them. Know which incentive you are buying.
Published outsourced customer service pricing, provider by provider
Most outsourcers only quote after a sales call. We checked 30 providers' own sites and found a handful that publish real numbers. Here they are in full, with the billable unit spelled out.

| Provider | Plan | Billable unit | Published price | What is included | Terms |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Influx | Talent as a Service | Per agent per month | From $1,400 (Level 1, Asia-Pacific), from $1,700 (Americas), from $1,000 part-time (4 hours a day) | Agent sourcing and vetting, 24/7 follow-the-sun cover. You run training and QA | No setup fee, month to month, one month's notice |
| Influx | Managed Operations | Per agent per month | From $2,000 (Asia-Pacific or EMEA), $2,100 (Americas), plus a team leader "at a small additional cost" | Team lead, training, QA, CX reporting | No setup fee, month to month. Languages beyond English cost 10% more |
| LTVplus | Managed Teams | Per agent per month, plus a management fee | Non-voice agent from $1,980, voice agent from $2,280, team lead $2,500. Management fee $500 a month for 1-2 agents, included at 3+ | QA, workforce management, training, equipment, benefits. PTO cover from 3 agents | 3-month pilot, then 30 days' notice. No setup or exit fees |
| Bunch | Full-time agents | Per agent per month | $1,100 to $1,350 | QA audits, custom shifts or 24/7 | Not stated |
| HelpSquad | Dedicated staff | Per hour worked | $8-$13 an hour full time. Back office (email and chat) $8-$10, voice $10-$13 | Night and weekend cover at the same rate | 20 hours a week minimum, 3-month initial term that auto-renews |
| HelpSquad | 24/7 shared live chat | Per month, bundle of chats | $185 for 50 chats, $350 for 100, $600 for 200 | Shared (not dedicated) agents | No overage rate published |
| Chatdesk | On-demand | Per resolved ticket, monthly bundle | $1,000 for 400 tickets, or $900 billed yearly | "Up to 24/7 coverage from real humans" on social, email and SMS | $99 setup fee to connect Shopify or Magento |
| Chatdesk | Dedicated | Per expert per month | $3,900, or $3,510 billed yearly | Live chat, faster SLAs, custom workflows | Same as above |
| PartnerHero | Dedicated agent | Per agent per month | From $1,975 offshore or nearshore, from $4,900 onshore (US). Flex support from $10 an hour | Dedicated agents | "Three month contract renewals" |
| Crescendo (archived Dec 2025) | Managed AI | Platform fee plus per solve | $2,900 a month plus $1.25 per AI solve. $2.25 per solve with human agents, since replaced by "Talk to sales" | AI plus human team | No setup fee. Extra for dedicated teams, more languages, surge volume |
| Virtustant | Nearshore staffing | Per hour, all-in | From $7 an hour. Its own report puts the median customer service rate at $10.83 | A hire you manage yourself | No setup fee, month to month |
Three notes on this table. HelpSquad publishes its dedicated-staff rates on its healthcare assistant pricing page, so ask for an ecommerce quote before you budget on them. PartnerHero's prices sit on its older service pages, and its own pricing page now redirects to Crescendo, so treat them as the last published figures rather than a live price list. And Influx's numbers convert to roughly $8 to $12 per productive hour, since its agents work "44 hours per week, delivering 40 productive hours", according to its how it works page.
For a wider view, Clutch's call center pricing guide puts the average provider on its directory at "less than $25 an hour". That band is too wide to budget from, which is why we lean on the published rate cards above. Our roundup of the best ecommerce customer service outsourcing companies goes provider by provider if you want the qualitative side.
What founders say they actually pay
The published rates line up with what operators report on Reddit, with one twist: freelancers are far cheaper than agencies, and the agency margin is large.
"We have 10+ CS agents in the Philippines for $3-5/hr."
"CS pay here is about $500 for locals. But you'll probably have to pay more to cover the agency fee, expect about up to 1k per employee."
From inside a Philippine BPO, one commenter put the gap plainly:
"Some clients are being charged 10-20 USD per hour or interaction by the BPO company."
Clutch reviews from DTC brands give real monthly and annual spend. Western Rise, a menswear brand, told Clutch it spends "around $2,000 a month" with Peak Support for three people including a team lead. Apparel brand Public Rec, with 8 to 12 Philippines-based agents, said: "In total over the three years, it's been estimated around $500,000. Last year, we spent $200,000." Cookware brand Caraway told Clutch it had spent "around $85,000–$125,000" with Boldr for about 12 frontline staff.
The in-house baseline: what a US hire really costs
To know whether outsourcing saves money, you need the in-house number. Most cost guides skip this, or quote a salary with no source.
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median customer service representative at $21.53 an hour, or $44,770 a year (May 2025 data). Wages are only part of it. The BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation release shows benefits make up 31.3% of total compensation for office and administrative support workers (June 2026). That means each $1 of wages costs you about $1.46 in total.
So a median US rep costs about $65,400 a year before you buy a laptop, a helpdesk seat or a manager. A team lead is more: first-line supervisors of office workers have a median of $33.41 an hour.
Hiring in-house also means you carry the staffing math yourself, which is where 24/7 gets expensive.
Why 24/7 coverage takes five agents, not one
This is the part of the cost to outsource customer support that surprises founders most. A week has 168 hours. A full-time agent works 40 of them. So one seat staffed around the clock needs 4.2 people before anyone takes a day off.
Then people take days off. Contact centres call the lost time "shrinkage": breaks, training, leave and sickness. NICE, a workforce software vendor, puts typical shrinkage at "25% to 40%, with averages around 30–35%", and Call Centre Helper calls 30% the industry standard. At 30%, the in-house number rises from 4.2 to 6.0 people.

Five or six agents buys you one person online at any moment, not one per channel. At 3am that one person is answering email, live chat and Instagram DMs at the same time. Two people during your busy afternoon means more hires again.
Outsourcers absorb some of this. LTVplus includes PTO and sick-day cover from three agents up, per its pricing page. Influx runs 24/7 as "follow-the-sun" cover, with agents in different regions each working their daytime. Either way you are paying for about five full-time agents to keep one seat filled. Our guide to 24/7 support with AI goes deeper on the coverage options.
Worked example: 24/7 email, chat and Instagram DMs for a Shopify brand
Let's cost something concrete. A Shopify brand doing around $10M a year wants every customer answered around the clock on three channels: email, live chat and Instagram DMs. Assume about 3,000 conversations a month, mostly order status, returns, exchanges and product questions. That is our assumption for the example, not a benchmark.
Every input below comes from a published rate. Coverage is one seat, 24/7, which is 728 hours a month (168 × 52 ÷ 12).
| Option | How we priced it | Monthly cost | Yearly cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Offshore, hourly | HelpSquad back office at $8-$10 an hour × 728 hours (its healthcare rate card) | $5,824-$7,280 | $69,900-$87,400 |
| Offshore, dedicated | Influx Talent as a Service, 5 × $1,400 | $7,000 | $84,000 |
| Offshore, managed | Influx Managed Operations, 5 × $2,000 (team leader extra) | $10,000+ | $120,000+ |
| Nearshore, dedicated | Influx Americas, 5 × $1,700 | $8,500 | $102,000 |
| Nearshore, managed | Influx Managed Operations Americas, 5 × $2,100 | $10,500+ | $126,000+ |
| US outsourced | PartnerHero onshore, 5 × $4,900 | $24,500 | $294,000 |
| In-house US | 6 hires × $44,770 median wage × 1.46 for benefits | about $32,700 | about $392,000 |
| Per-ticket human | Chatdesk on-demand at about $2.50 × 3,000 tickets, before volume discounts | about $7,500 | about $90,000 |
| Managed AI | eesel Managed Support, flat | $5,000 | $60,000 |

A few things jump out.
- The cheapest human option is close to the managed AI price, not far below it. HelpSquad's hourly rate gets offshore cover to about $5,800 a month. But that is one seat, three channels, three-month minimum term, and you write the playbook and do the QA.
- US-based people cost three to four times more than offshore for the same hours. That premium buys accent, time zone and cultural fit, which matter more for phone than for email.
- In-house is the most expensive, even at a median wage. And the $32,700 excludes a team lead, software, recruiting and the hours you spend managing.
None of the human options include the hidden costs in the next section. Those land on top.
Hidden costs in the cost to outsource customer support
Every provider in our pricing table prices the steady state: a trained team, working a normal month. The real bill has costs at the edges, and they cluster at launch, at every resignation and in Q4.

| Hidden cost | What it looks like in published terms | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Setup and integration fees | $99 to connect Shopify at Chatdesk. Chatdesk's own cost guide puts a start-up fee at $500-$2,000 | Chatdesk pricing, Chatdesk blog |
| Minimum terms | 3-month initial term at HelpSquad, 3-month pilot at LTVplus, "three month contract renewals" at PartnerHero | HelpSquad, LTVplus, PartnerHero |
| Minimum project size | $10,000+ at Peak Support, $5,000+ at Helpware, per their Clutch profiles | Peak Support on Clutch, Helpware on Clutch |
| Small-team management fee | $500 a month for 1-2 agents at LTVplus | LTVplus |
| Team lead and QA | Influx charges $400 to $600 more per agent for Managed Operations than for agents alone, plus a team leader. LTVplus lists a team lead at $2,500 a month | Influx, LTVplus |
| Language premium | 10% for languages beyond English at Influx | Influx |
| Ramp | Influx says live "in as little as two to four weeks from first conversation". LTVplus says "live in 30 days". In Australian contact centres, 45% of agents reach competency in under 8 weeks and 28% take more than 12 | Influx, LTVplus, ACXPA 2025 |
| Attrition | Average contact centre agent attrition was 39% in 2024 across North America and EMEA, per a NICE survey of 400 leaders. Replacing one agent costs about 30% of salary in Australian data | NICE survey, ACXPA |
| Peak season | Public Rec ran 12 agents over the holidays against a usual minimum of 8. Crescendo charges extra for surge volume above a monthly threshold | Peak Support on Clutch, Crescendo (archived) |
| Your own time | Playbook writing, training, calibration and QA review stay with you on agent-only plans | See the quotes below |
Ramp and training land on you
The rate card assumes the agents already know your products. They don't. A senior CX manager at a DTC home goods company told Clutch about the first months with Boldr:
"We soon realized that it wasn't enough time to train an offshore team on a product they weren't knowledgeable about already. So, we took more time to train Boldr.'s team ..."
Senior Customer Experience Manager, home goods company, Boldr on Clutch
A Reddit commenter who has managed ecommerce support since 2014 gives the same advice for freelancers: "you'll have to prepare your knowledge base, training materials, accesses etc.. do this before hiring" (u/hosting128 on r/ecommerce). Our post on offshore support knowledge transfer covers how to make that handover faster.
Attrition resets the clock
Every time an agent leaves, you pay the ramp again. Even happy clients mention it. Western Rise's CX manager rated Peak Support highly and still said: "the turnover's higher than we'd like it to be. It doesn't negatively affect us but it takes time to train new agents" (Peak Support on Clutch).
A Shopify owner doing about $180k a month put the fear more bluntly while shopping for a VA:
"The last thing I need is training someone just to have them leave for a dollar more somewhere else."
Cheap rates often cost more
Even people who sell outsourcing warn against buying on the hourly rate. Hannah Clark Steiman, an executive at Peak Support (so read it as a vendor view), wrote on LinkedIn:
"Cheap BPOs aren't as cost-effective as they seem. Sure, a low hourly rate looks great on paper, but what about the hidden costs?"
One Canadian ecommerce founder learned it the hard way: their Philippines team "was an absolute disaster. They were cheap, but their language skills were not very good, and the time zone was a little bit too much for us" (u/Dapper_Culture5364 on r/ecommercemarketing). They moved the team to South Africa. Another founder who had tried both said "I HIGHLY suggest you consider latam. I've had 10 times better results for customer facing positions" (u/traker998 on r/startups).
For a sense of how to budget all this, a 10-25% buffer on top of the steady-state quote is a reasonable planning number for the first year. That is our rule of thumb, not a published benchmark, and it rises if you expect a hard Q4. See our guide on AI support for Black Friday for the peak-season side.
Ecommerce customer service outsourcing cost vs AI options
A few years ago, outsourcing was the only way to get round-the-clock cover without hiring a night shift. That has changed, because most ecommerce questions are routine. One r/ecommerce commenter who cut support costs by about 40% said the top five question types ("where's my order, how do I return, do you have X in stock, what's your shipping policy, and I need to change my order") account for "60-70% of all tickets" (u/Crescitaly on r/ecommerce).
There are three ways to put AI on that work, and they price very differently.
| Option | Example | Price | Who runs it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-serve AI software | eesel AI | $299 a month for 500 credits up to $1,749 for 5,000. A ticket or chat is 1 credit, so 3,000 conversations is $1,149 a month | You set it up, review its work and handle every escalation |
| AI plus outsourced humans | Crescendo (archived price list) | $2,900 a month plus $1.25 per AI solve, so about $6,650 at 3,000 solves | Provider, priced per conversation |
| Managed AI support | eesel Managed Support | $5,000 a month flat for up to about 5,000 conversations | eesel's AI and eesel's team |
Self-serve software is the cheapest by a wide margin, and teams with a support lead who has time to own it should start there. It does take work. As one r/ecommerce commenter put it, "A bot needs context to perform better. That means writing extensive documentation... That 'work' is substantial, but it's still less than not having the AI" (u/Haunting-Effort8684). Our guides to AI customer service cost and cost per resolution with and without AI go deeper on the per-ticket maths.
There is a real failure mode on the other side too. The most-shared cautionary tale is Klarna, which went all-in on AI and then pulled back:
"Klarna was one of the first to go all-in on AI, replacing 700 customer service staff last year. Now CEO @klarnaseb says they focused too much on cost and hurt quality, so they're investing in humans again and will let customers talk to real people."
The lesson we take from it: AI on its own, with nobody watching, is a cost cut that customers feel. That is the gap a managed service is meant to close.
Where eesel Managed Support fits
eesel Managed Support is the managed AI row in the tables above. eesel's AI agents answer every customer conversation inside the tools you already use, and a real person on eesel's team watches over your account and handles anything sensitive.

Here is what the $5,000 covers, from the Managed Support page:
- Every channel at once. Email and helpdesk (Gorgias, Zendesk, Freshdesk or Gmail), Instagram, Facebook Messenger and TikTok DMs, SMS, WhatsApp, reviews and phone.
- Real actions in your apps. Tracking orders, creating exchanges and issuing refunds within your limits, inside Shopify and your shipping and returns apps.
- People behind the AI. "Anything sensitive goes to a person on our team, or to you if you prefer."
- Setup in about a week. eesel reads your past tickets, policies and catalog and writes your playbook with you. No setup fee.
- A weekly briefing on what customers asked, what was fixed and what is costing you sales.
- Month-to-month billing, with "no notice period and no exit fee".
Map that against the hidden-costs table. There is no setup fee, no minimum term, no ramp that resets when someone quits, and the price is the same in November as in March. It is a new service, in a founding partner beta, so there are no customer results to show for it yet.
The AI underneath it does have a track record on the self-serve side. Question Beauty, a DTC cosmetics brand on Gorgias and Shopify, had eesel handle about 990 Gorgias tickets in a month, send about 960 replies and look up about 290 Shopify orders, with refunds, complaints and wholesale requests passed to a person (Question Beauty story).
When outsourcing to people is still the better call
We would still price a human team in these cases:
- You are phone-heavy. Managed Support answers and sorts calls, but long inbound sales calls or complex phone work suit a trained voice team. Our post on AI phone support for ecommerce covers what AI handles well on the phone.
- Your work is regulated, and a person has to handle or sign off every case.
- You are well past 5,000 conversations a month. The flat price is built for up to about that volume. Above it, a large BPO's per-agent pricing can work out well, or ask eesel for a number.
- You want to run the AI yourself. Then eesel's self-serve plans cost a fraction of the managed price.
For the wider trade-offs, our call center outsourcing pros and cons and call center outsourcing alternatives go through them in detail.
How to get a quote you can actually compare
If you are collecting quotes this month, ask every provider the same questions so the numbers line up:
- What is the billable unit? Agent-month, hour worked, resolved ticket or conversation. Convert every quote to a monthly cost at your real volume.
- How many agents for one seat 24/7? If the answer is fewer than about five, ask who covers leave and sickness.
- What is not included? Team lead, QA, workforce management, tools, languages, and setup or integration fees.
- What is the minimum term and notice period? Three months is common.
- How long until the team is live, and who trains them? Then ask what happens when an agent leaves.
- What does November cost? Get the surge price in writing.
Then put one more row in your spreadsheet: a flat-fee managed option. Our comparison of AI vs an offshore support team runs that side by side, and the AI customer service agency guide covers what to ask an AI-first provider before you sign.
Try eesel Managed Support
If you want 24/7 cover on every channel without hiring, training or managing anyone, eesel Managed Support runs your customer support for $5,000 a month flat. eesel's AI works inside your existing helpdesk, Shopify store and social accounts, and eesel's own team watches over it and handles escalations. There is no setup fee, no contract, and it is built for brands with up to about 5,000 conversations a month.
