Why do teams look past Freddy?

Freshchat is a solid live chat tool, and Freddy AI Agent is the AI it ships with. The pain usually isn't that Freddy is broken. It's a mix of how it's billed, what it can learn from, and how long it takes to get right.

Here's what I see come up, in order of how often:

  • Session billing on top of seats. Freddy AI Agent costs $49 per 100 sessions on the Freshchat pricing page, and a session is everything a customer says to the AI within 24 hours. The first 500 sessions are a one-time allowance on Growth and up, and Freshworks' session FAQ says testing your own agent in preview uses them up too.
  • It can't read your history. Freddy's knowledge sources are URLs (10 per agent), files (up to 200), public help center articles and custom Q&As. Past conversations and tickets aren't on the list, and updated content needs a manual resync.
  • The hard stop when sessions run out. On chat channels, conversations go to human agents. On the self-service widget, the AI simply stops.

Reviewers say the same things in their own words:

Capterra

"Ai features are limited and scalability to connect with mcps is low, it would be better if we can connect with llms like claude and chat gpt"

G2

"The LLMs provided have very few AI units. It should offer a better limit for each agent call, or reduce the AI units required per call."

The Freddy AI alternatives question has a sharper version once you look at the plumbing, which is where most lists go wrong.

What does Freddy still do well?

Credit where it's due. Freddy is the only AI that's already inside Freshchat from the Growth plan up, with no webhook to set up. Freshworks says it speaks 60+ languages and comes with 50+ ready-made agentic workflows for things like refunds and order changes, with Shopify, Stripe, PayPal and FedEx built in.

If you're on Growth, Freddy is your most practical option, because (as you'll see next) the alternatives need API access that plan doesn't list. On Free there's no Freddy AI Agent at all, so any AI means an upgrade. The Freshchat G2 page has fans of the bot too:

G2

"The AI-powered chatbots are also useful for handling routine questions right away, which helps reduce the workload on support agents."

My take: if your chat volume is low and your answers live in a public help center, stay on Freddy and read the Freddy AI review for tuning tips. Look elsewhere when the bill grows or the answers live in your ticket history.

What plan do you need for a Freddy alternative?

This is the part almost every "Freshchat AI" roundup skips. A third-party AI connects to Freshchat in one of two ways, and both use the Freshchat API. Freshworks' API limits table (updated August 2026) lists the chat API as NA on Free and Growth, and 2,000 calls per minute on Pro and Enterprise.

Freshchat plan staircase showing the chat API listed only on Pro and Enterprise
Freshchat plan staircase showing the chat API listed only on Pro and Enterprise

NA could mean "no published limit" rather than "no access", so I'd treat it as a strong signal, not gospel. But the vendors back it up: My AskAI's Freshchat docs require Freshchat Pro or above, and Ada's setup guide tells customers to check API access with their Freshworks rep. If you're on Growth at $19, budget the jump to $49 per agent before you budget the AI.

Two more rules from the plumbing that will save you an afternoon:

  • One webhook per Freshchat account. Per eesel's Freshchat docs, each account has one conversation webhook, so two outside AIs can't both listen without a relay in between. Pick one.
  • Turn Freddy off on that topic. If Freddy and another AI both serve the same Freshchat topic, customers get two replies.

Freshchat AI alternatives at a glance

The seven options split into three routes. The first column is the one most Freshchat teams actually want, because nobody has to learn a new inbox.

How do in-widget AI alternatives work?

Every "inside the widget" tool on this list uses the same loop, which helps when you're comparing them. Freshchat sends each new customer message to one webhook. The AI writes an answer and posts it back through the Conversations API, usually under a real agent seat, so the customer sees a normal reply in your normal widget. Handoff is just reassigning the conversation to a group or a person.

How an in-widget AI works with Freshchat: webhook in, reply out as an agent, handoff by assignment
How an in-widget AI works with Freshchat: webhook in, reply out as an agent, handoff by assignment

The differences that matter are what the AI learns from, how it hands off, and what it charges for. That's how I'd read each section below. For a broader take on handoff design, see the AI agent handoff guide.

1. eesel

Best for: Freshchat teams that also run Freshdesk and want one AI across chat and tickets.

eesel replying inside a Freshchat widget under a Freshchat agent's name, as taken from the eesel docs
eesel replying inside a Freshchat widget under a Freshchat agent's name, as taken from the eesel docs

Full disclosure, this is the company I work for. eesel is an AI teammate platform, and the teammate that matters here is the AI helpdesk agent. It now has a direct Freshchat connection: it answers live chats inside your existing Freshchat widget, in real time, under one of your Freshchat agents' names. There's no second chatbot bubble on your site.

How it works with Freshchat

Freshchat is a channel on eesel's Freshdesk integration, so you connect Freshdesk first. Setup is one form with three fields: a Freshchat API token, eesel's webhook URL pasted into Freshchat, and the key Freshchat shows back.

eesel's Freshchat setup form with API token, webhook URL and authentication key fields, as taken from the eesel docs
eesel's Freshchat setup form with API token, webhook URL and authentication key fields, as taken from the eesel docs

The part I like most: it answers chats from your Freshdesk help center, canned responses and past tickets, the same sources the agent already learned for your ticket queue. Plain-language instructions decide which chats it joins (one Freshchat topic, for example) and when it hands off by assigning the chat to a group or agent.

eesel's Freshdesk integration page listing Help Center, Canned Responses and Tickets as sources, as taken from the eesel docs
eesel's Freshdesk integration page listing Help Center, Canned Responses and Tickets as sources, as taken from the eesel docs

I've watched this matter on real calls. One eesel customer, a delivery company on Freshdesk, opened their first test chat in Dutch asking about shipping costs to Germany. The agent found the tariff docs and answered with the actual prices, and their very next question was how to get it learning from their past Freshdesk tickets too. They signed up. Another prospect, an Italy-based email-security company on Freshdesk, tested Freddy side by side and found eesel more precise.

If you'd rather drive it from a terminal, the eesel CLI lets you (or a coding agent like Claude Code) check status, manage automations and kick off syncs with commands like eesel status and eesel automations. The Freshchat token itself still goes through the dashboard form.

Pros

  • Same teammate works Freshdesk tickets and Freshchat chats, with one set of instructions
  • Learns from past tickets and canned responses, not only public articles
  • 1 credit per chat, however many messages it takes
  • Every chat shows up on an Activity page with the searches and reasoning behind each reply

Cons

  • Needs Freshdesk connected; it isn't a standalone Freshchat bot
  • Live chat replies go out live, with no draft mode in chat, so watch the inbox for the first few days
  • Business hours and the widget's look are still set in Freshchat, not eesel

Pricing

eesel pricing is a fixed monthly plan: free with 100 credits to try, then $299/month for 500 credits, up to $1,749 for 5,000. A chat or a ticket is 1 credit. No seat fees, and optional overage at $0.80 per credit with a cap you set.

Verdict: if you run Freshdesk and Freshchat together, this is the one I'd test first. If you don't use Freshdesk at all, start with My AskAI or OpenCX instead.

2. My AskAI

Best for: small teams that want a ticket-priced AI in Freshchat with a careful, notes-first rollout.

My AskAI's AI Chat Status property shown in the Freshchat conversation panel, as taken from the My AskAI docs
My AskAI's AI Chat Status property shown in the Freshchat conversation panel, as taken from the My AskAI docs

My AskAI has a native Freshchat integration on all its paid plans, and it's the most Freshchat-aware tool here after eesel. It also works through Freshchat on WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and SMS.

How it works with Freshchat

You turn Freddy off, add an API key and chat URL, and paste My AskAI's webhook into Freshchat. By default it posts internal notes, not customer replies, which is a nice safety net. Flip on direct replies when you trust it. Customers type "Talk to a person" to escalate, and an ai_chat_status field shows what the AI did on each chat (My AskAI docs).

Pros

  • Notes-first default makes the first week low risk
  • Can train on historic tickets from Freshdesk and Freshchat
  • Clear ticket-based price

Cons

  • Requires Freshchat Pro or above
  • Pro plan support is AI-only, with no human chat or email support
  • Removing branding or adding API, Slack or Teams access is $49/month each on Pro

Pricing

My AskAI pricing starts at Pro, $199/month for 1,000 tickets, with extra tickets around $0.12 each. Scale is $499 for 2,000 tickets and Enterprise starts at $999.

Verdict: the best value if you want an in-widget AI and don't need it to share a brain with a ticketing queue. The Chatbase vs My AskAI comparison covers it in more depth.

3. SiteGPT

Best for: answering website FAQs in Freshchat on the smallest budget.

SiteGPT homepage with its customer service agent chat preview, as taken from SiteGPT

SiteGPT is a website chatbot builder that also connects to Freshchat. It calls the integration "Freshdesk" in its UI, but the SiteGPT docs describe it as connecting Freshdesk Messaging (formerly Freshchat), the same product.

How it works with Freshchat

The bot answers first in your Freshchat widget. When an agent replies, the bot steps back, and when the agent resolves the chat, the bot takes over again. One thing to know: SiteGPT does not assign the chat to an agent or group, so handoff relies on your existing Freshchat assignment rules. It reads message text only.

Pros

  • Lowest entry price here
  • Trains on websites, sitemaps, files, Notion, Google Drive, YouTube and more
  • Simple bot-first, agent-takes-over flow

Cons

  • The Freshchat integration needs SiteGPT's Growth plan
  • Doesn't learn from past tickets
  • Messages on the bigger GPT-4.1 model count 10x against your limit

Pricing

SiteGPT pricing: Starter $39/month billed yearly (4,000 messages), Growth $79 yearly or $129 monthly (10,000 messages), Scale $259 yearly. No free plan, only a 7-day trial.

Verdict: fine for a public-FAQ bot. If your hard questions need order data or ticket history, it'll run out of road. See the SiteGPT alternatives for more.

4. OpenCX

Best for: teams that only want to pay when the AI actually resolves a chat.

OpenCX homepage with the "Extraordinary customer experiences with AI agents" headline, as taken from OpenCX
OpenCX homepage with the "Extraordinary customer experiences with AI agents" headline, as taken from OpenCX

OpenCX has the most thought-through Freshchat routing of the in-widget tools. The OpenCX Freshchat docs give you two modes: the AI picks up every unassigned chat, or it only answers chats Freshchat already routed to its agent seat.

How it works with Freshchat

It posts as a dedicated Freshchat agent. Handoff has four options: unassign the chat, set a marker your Freshchat automations can route on, send to a named agent, or send to a group so Freshchat's own assignment still picks the person. Each handoff leaves a private note with a summary and the customer's mood.

Pros

  • Pay per resolution; handoffs to humans are free
  • Most flexible handoff options of the in-widget tools
  • Covers voice, email, WhatsApp, SMS and Slack too

Cons

  • Only 2 G2 reviews so far, so there's little independent signal
  • Its Freshchat docs don't say whether Freshchat history feeds its knowledge
  • Freshchat tokens are tied to the admin who created them

Pricing

OpenCX pricing is $0.75 to $0.90 per resolved ticket depending on volume, agreed in writing before go-live, with no seat or setup fees.

Verdict: a strong pick if your finance team wants outcome-based billing. Ask how they define "resolved" before you sign, because that one word sets your bill.

5. Ada

Best for: larger brands that want an enterprise AI front door with Freshchat behind it.

Ada homepage with "The agentic customer experience platform" headline, as taken from Ada
Ada homepage with "The agentic customer experience platform" headline, as taken from Ada

Ada doesn't answer inside your Freshchat widget. It runs its own AI agent and widget, and hands off into Freshchat when a human is needed.

How it works with Freshchat

The Ada Freshchat handoff finds or creates the customer in Freshchat, opens a new conversation on a named channel and passes the AI transcript along. Messages then relay both ways. It needs a custom "Ada relay app" installed through the Freshworks Developer Portal. The customer can't go back to the AI until an agent resolves the chat in Freshchat.

Pros

  • Two-way relay with the transcript passed to the agent
  • Can check Freshchat business hours and response times before handing off
  • 60 languages on chat and email

Cons

  • Quote-only pricing
  • You run Ada's widget, not Freshchat's
  • The relay app adds a custom app to maintain

Pricing

Ada's pricing page is a demo form based on yearly contact volume. The Ada pricing guide has what's known.

Verdict: worth it for enterprise volume and a dedicated AI team. Overkill for a 10-person support desk. See Ada alternatives if that's you.

6. Botpress

Best for: teams with a developer who wants to build custom bot flows and use Freshchat for the human side.

Botpress's Freshchat integration page describing human-in-the-loop handoff, as taken from Botpress
Botpress's Freshchat integration page describing human-in-the-loop handoff, as taken from Botpress

Botpress is a bot-building platform, and it maintains a Freshchat integration for human-in-the-loop handoff. Your bot lives in Botpress's channels; Freshchat is where the humans pick up.

How it works with Freshchat

You add your Freshchat topic name, API key and domain, paste the Botpress webhook into Freshchat, and install the HITL plugin. When the bot escalates, the conversation lands on your default Freshchat topic.

Pros

  • Full control over flows, logic and integrations
  • Maintained by the Botpress team
  • Big community, 514 G2 reviews

Cons

  • You're building, not switching on
  • Human-handled conversations count against your conversation limit the same as AI ones
  • Monthly AI spend cap is still listed as "coming soon"

Pricing

Botpress pricing: Free (100 conversations), Plus $150/month (250 conversations), Team $750 (1,500), Enterprise custom. Each conversation includes $0.10 of AI usage, and extra credit is bought automatically past that.

Verdict: great if you want to build. If you want an AI live in Freshchat this week, it's the long way round.

7. Chatbase

Best for: a quick website AI agent that passes hard chats to Freshchat agents.

Chatbase homepage with "Conversational agents for customer experience" headline, as taken from Chatbase
Chatbase homepage with "Conversational agents for customer experience" headline, as taken from Chatbase

Chatbase doesn't reply inside Freshchat. Its "Freshchat live chat" action hands the conversation from the Chatbase widget to a human agent in Freshchat.

How it works with Freshchat

Connect your chat URL and API key, then create the action. It only runs on Chatbase's own chat bubble, help page and Center Stage channels. Chatbase doesn't say which plan unlocks it; its helpdesk integrations start on Standard, so plan for that.

Pros

  • Fast to set up and easy to tune
  • Free plan to test the AI side
  • 4.8 on G2 from 46 reviews

Cons

  • Two widgets in your stack: Chatbase's for AI, Freshchat's for humans
  • Ticket-history training is Pro-only ($500) and only from Zendesk or Salesforce
  • The free plan allows 0 actions, so no handoff on Free

Pricing

Chatbase pricing: Free (50 message credits), Hobby $40/month, Standard $150, Pro $500. Yearly billing is 20% off.

Verdict: good for a first AI experiment. Less good if you want one inbox and one customer-facing widget.

What if you replace Freshchat entirely?

Some teams reading this are really asking "should I leave Freshchat?" The honest answer: only if the AI is one of several reasons.

Zendesk agent workspace with a WhatsApp conversation and customer interactions timeline, as taken from Zendesk
Zendesk agent workspace with a WhatsApp conversation and customer interactions timeline, as taken from Zendesk

Zendesk is the main replace-it option. Suite Team is $55 per agent per month billed annually, Suite Professional $115. AI agents for messaging and email are included, with 5 automated resolutions per agent per month on Team plans and 10 on Professional. Past that, Zendesk charges $1.50 per automated resolution committed or $2.00 pay-as-you-go (Zendesk help). The Freshdesk vs Zendesk breakdown goes deeper.

What about staying in the Freshworks family with Freshdesk Omni? It uses the same Freddy session pricing, and Freshworks' own upgrade article says there's no direct upgrade path from Freshchat to the new Omni, so the setup starts from scratch. It isn't a cheaper route to better AI.

How much do Freshchat AI alternatives cost?

Sticker prices don't compare cleanly because the billing units differ: Freddy bills 24-hour sessions, eesel bills per chat, My AskAI per ticket, OpenCX per resolution. Plug in your own numbers below. It assumes you keep Freshchat seats and that one AI chat roughly equals one Freddy session.

At the default numbers (5 agents on Pro, 1,000 AI chats a month), Freddy adds about $490 to $245 in seats. My AskAI is the cheapest AI line at $199, eesel is $499, and OpenCX lands around $540 at a 60% resolution rate.

So eesel isn't the cheapest sticker at that volume, and I'd rather you hear that from me. Where it earns the difference is the work around the chat: it already knows your Freshdesk ticket history, the same agent handles your ticket queue for no extra platform fee, and a 40-message chat still costs 1 credit. If your chats are long and your answers live in past tickets, that's the gap that shows up in resolution rate, not on the price page.

What about Kommunicate and DocsBot?

Both come up when you ask an AI assistant about Freshchat, so it's worth being clear: neither connects to Freshchat today.

  • Kommunicate has a Freshdesk integration but no Freshchat one, so you'd swap Freshchat's widget for Kommunicate's. The Freshdesk connection needs Professional, $200/month ($167 yearly). More in the Kommunicate pricing post.
  • DocsBot trains on resolved Freshdesk tickets from its $149 Standard plan, but hands off through a Freshdesk ticket form, not Freshchat. See DocsBot pricing.

If staying in Freshchat is the point, skip both.

Which Freshchat AI alternative should you pick?

Here's how I'd decide, in the order I'd ask the questions:

  1. On Growth and not upgrading? Stay on Freddy, and tune its sources. The guide to Freddy knowledge sources helps.
  2. Run Freshdesk and Freshchat together? Test eesel first.
  3. Freshchat only, small budget? My AskAI, or SiteGPT for a public-FAQ bot.
  4. Want to pay per resolution? OpenCX.
  5. Building custom flows or already on an enterprise AI? Botpress or Ada, with Freshchat for handoff.

For more Freshchat-specific reading, see best AI for Freshchat and the wider list of Freshchat alternatives.

Try eesel in your Freshchat widget

If your team lives in Freshdesk and Freshchat, eesel slots into both. It joins your Freshchat widget as one of your agents, answers from the Freshdesk help center, macros and past tickets it already learned, and assigns anything it shouldn't handle to the right group. You can watch every reply and the reasoning behind it on the Activity page before you widen the topics it covers.

It's free to start with 100 credits, so you can run it on a single Freshchat topic and compare it with Freddy on the same questions. Try eesel and point it at one topic first.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best Freshchat AI alternatives to Freddy?
If you want to keep Freshchat, the Freshchat AI alternatives that answer inside the native widget are eesel, My AskAI, SiteGPT and OpenCX. Ada, Botpress and Chatbase run their own widget and hand off into Freshchat. If you're ready to leave Freshchat, Zendesk is the main replace-it option.
Can I use a different AI with Freshchat instead of Freddy AI?
Yes. Third-party tools listen to Freshchat's conversation webhook and post replies through the Freshchat API, so the answers show up in your existing widget under an agent's name. Turn Freddy off on the same topic first, or customers get two replies. The Freshchat AI setup guide walks through it.
Which Freshchat plan do I need for a third-party AI?
Plan for Pro ($49 per agent per month, billed annually) or Enterprise. Freshworks' API limits table lists the chat API only on those two plans, and My AskAI states its Freshchat connection needs Pro or above. On Growth, Freddy is the practical choice; the Free plan doesn't include Freddy AI Agent at all. See the full Freshchat pricing breakdown.
How much does Freddy AI cost in Freshchat?
Freddy AI Agent is $49 per 100 sessions, where a session is everything a customer says to the AI within 24 hours. The first 500 sessions are a one-time allowance on Growth and up, not a monthly one. Copilot is a separate $29 per agent per month on Pro and Enterprise. More detail in the Freddy AI pricing guide.
Is there a cheaper Freshchat AI alternative than Freddy?
At 1,000 AI chats a month, Freddy runs about $490 on top of seats. My AskAI Pro is $199 for 1,000 tickets, eesel is $499 for 1,000 credits, and OpenCX charges $0.75 to $0.90 per resolved ticket. The cheapest sticker isn't always the cheapest setup, so check what each one learns from.
Can a Freshchat AI alternative learn from my past chats and tickets?
Most can't. Freddy, SiteGPT and Chatbase don't train on Freshchat or Freshdesk history. My AskAI can train on past Freshdesk and Freshchat tickets, and eesel learns from your Freshdesk help center, canned responses and past tickets before it answers a single chat.
Should I upgrade from Freshchat to Freshdesk Omni for better AI?
Only if you want Omni for other reasons. Freshdesk Omni uses the same Freddy session pricing, and Freshworks says there is no direct upgrade path from Freshchat to the new Omni, so setup starts from scratch. Compare the two in the Freshdesk vs Omni guide.
